Hurricane Predicting Supercomputers in England
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organization supported by 34 states. These supercomputers that monitor, track and predict hurricanes, do so after collection of data from planes flying into the eye of a hurricane. These supercomputers are running a stripped down version of the Linux operating system. The supercomputers have high performance storage. Each of their XC40 systems has about 10 petabytes of storage and offers more than 350 gigabytes per second of I/O bandwidth.

Their official website states that: "All ECMWF’s operational forecasts aim to assess the most likely forecast and also the degree of confidence one can have in that forecast. To do this the Centre carries out an ensemble of predictions which individually are full descriptions of the evolution of the weather, but collectively they assess the likelihood or probability of a range of possible future weather."
