Two Nabbed For Computer Worm.

computer wormAuthorities in Morocco and Turkey have arrested two people believed responsible for a computer worm that infected networks at U.S. companies and government agencies earlier this month.

Farid Essebar, 18, was arrested in Morocco, while Atilla Ekici, 21, was arrested in Turkey on Thursday, Louis M. Riegel, the FBI's assistant director for cybercrimes, said Friday. They will be prosecuted in those countries, Riegel said.

Essebar wrote the code that attacked computers that run Microsoft operating systems and Ekici paid him for it, Riegel said. It's unclear they ever met, "but they certainly knew each other via the internet," he said.

Riegel said he does not know how much money changed hands. Microsoft and FBI officials also declined to estimate the monetary damage done by the Zotob worm and its variations. The pair also is believed responsible for an earlier worm, Mytob, that first showed up in February, Riegel said.

The Zotob worm and its variations targeted computers that run Microsoft operating systems, with Windows 2000 users most seriously affected.

The worm disrupted computer operations in mid-August at several large news organizations, including The Associated Press, ABC, CNN and The New York Times; such companies as heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar; and the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau.

Measuring Site Statistics as Part of SEO Strategy

Measuring the behavior of visitors and spiders should be an integral part of your optimization efforts.

web site statisticsWhat happens when your SEO efforts begin to pay off and you start to see an increase in visitor traffic? Measuring the onsite behavior of your visitors and spiders is essential, not only in gauging the effectiveness of your optimization efforts, but in measuring the effectiveness of your website design in converting those visitors to buyers.

Visits

A visit is a series of actions that begins when a visitor views their first page from your site, and ends when the visitor leaves your site or remains idle for a period of time (usually 30 minutes). Looking at visit trends over time for your site is an effective way to measure the overall impact of your optimization efforts.

Page Views

In order to view a web page with embedded images, a browser must retrieve multiple files. The page and its embedded files counts as a single page view. Understanding how many page views and which pages are being viewed is important in gauging the effectiveness of keywords research and selection. Knowing how many visitors viewed a specific product or category page is a very good indication of the success of selecting and optimizing for a specific key phrase.

Referrals

A referral is a web page that contains a link to one of your site pages that was used by a visitor to get to your site. One of the most useful search engine reports in WebTrends, a leading provider of web analytics solutions, is the Search Phrases report. This report will give you a count of key phrases for each search engine. Understanding where your referrals are coming from is essential in fine tuning your keywords. Most of your traffic will come from search engines, but not all traffic.

Measuring Spider Traffic

The basic metrics should also be used to measure search engine spider traffic. Knowing which pages spiders have traversed, the depth of the crawl, and how often they visit can provide valuable insight into the effectiveness of the site’s design and internal linking structure.

Spider Crawl Depth

The depth of a spiders visit refers to how much of the site’s content is traversed and indexed by the spider. When looking at a typical website design hierarchy, you may have product, category and informational pages. It’s important to understand which content in a particular area is visited by spiders because most spiders will not visit all of the pages of a site. The number of pages visited will depend on many factors, but is usually most dependent on how important the site is viewed by the particular search engine.

Spider Visit Frequency

Understanding how often a spider visits a site can give insight into how the search engine views your site’s content and importance. For many search engines, the more important the site is viewed, the more frequently it will be visited. This can obviously be an important indication of the success of your SEO efforts.

If you're trying to generate revenue with your web site, you need visitors, and that's where SEO comes in. SEO is important because of the amount of competition you have. When you're competing in a worldwide market, you need to stand out. Let us help you.

Mozilla Firefox Warning!

firefox upgradeUsers have been urged to upgrade to the latest versions of Mozilla's software to protect themselves from a series of critical security holes.

The Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) warned on Monday that earlier versions of Firefox, and other Mozilla software based on Firefox code, contain a clutch of vulnerabilities that expose users to attack.

The Mozilla Foundation released a new version of Firefox last week, version 1.5.0.2, which it said contained fixes for several security flaws.

According to security firm Secunia, there are a total of 21 flaws in the older versions of Firefox, such as Firefox 1.5, some of which it described as critical.

Change Your Screen Resolution

First right-click on a blank spot on the desktop and then left click on Properties from the menu that appears.

The display properties dialogue box will appear. Click on the settings tab at the top right of the box. The areas worth noting are: Screen Resolution
This slide bar is what you use to change the resolution, the options you have will depend on your graphics card and monitor, but the standard options are 800x600, 1024x768 and 1152x864. Normally the default (in XP) is set to 800x600 which means the display will be 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high. We recommend using 1024x768 or higher for better quality graphics and internet experience

This pull down box will contain the current color options available, again this will depend on your grahics card and monitor, for best results select the highest option available.

Changing the Resolution
To change your resolution simply slide the bar along to the resolution of your choice and then click the Apply button. After clicking Apply your screen will resize to the new resolution and you will be presented with a confirm dialogue box (see left), if you are happy with the way your screen looks then simply click Yes, if you would like to try a different resolution click No. When you have finished simply close the Display properties box.

Note: It is best to use your PC for a while in the new resolution to see if it is suitable for you.
